The average person is spending £25.10 more at the supermarket since 2014, figures show, and residents in Brighton are the most likely to blow the budget.

That's according to a new report by Ubamarket that looked at how much Brits are spending on their weekly shop - which is currently £62.40.

But the past few years has also seen a rise in the super shopper - those who cherry pick what they buy and where, in order to obtain the best produce at the best prices.

It's led to a spike in demand for specialist 'own brand' supermarkets such as Aldi and Lidl - who won over 18 million households last Christmas.

But what products are we loving and hating from the own brand sector - and are there any that are actually beating the branded versions?

Last week we wrote about the best and worst Aldi foods - as revealed by the shoppers themselves and in our latest supermarket instalment, we put the love it or hate it test to Lidl shoppers - to find out just what they rate, and why.

What customers love

Lidl's mini cucumbers got top marks

Mirror Money asked Lidl shoppers on social media what products they would and wouldn't recommend - and the results were fascinating.

"Everything in the Deluxe range is super scrummy with unusual dishes too," one shopper exclaimed.

Mini Oakland cucumbers were hailed as a big hit - with shoppers describing them as perfectly crunchy and idea for lunchboxes. Elsewhere, fans were quick to rate its fresh bakery - giving Lidl's sourdough and croissants top marks.

But there was one clear winner in the food-to-go aisle. Shoppers said they were "in love" with its Pastel De Nata Portuguese tarts, especially when "fresh out of the oven".

But other products didn't get people as excited - with dried produce such as cereal and biscuits drawing in the worst scores.

Lidl's own brand Crownfield muesli and weetabix were slammed as "tasteless" and "like cardboard", along with its digestive biscuits and custard creams.

Shoppers said its tomato soup tastes just as good as the Heinz version

Lidl's fresh lettuce also lost marks after shoppers complained theirs was "walking with bugs", which one woman said "crawled onto her kitchen counter", while unlike its fresh meat, fresh fish didn't score so highly.

Elesewhere, similar to Aldi, Lidl's own brand Newgate baked beans failed to win over the nation's hearts - but its tomato soup was described as even better than Heinz.

And it's not the only own brand Lidl item that seems to have beaten the bigger rivals, either. Shoppers said its Freeway diet coke and lemonade were 'the closest they'd found to the real thing' - and it costs just 42p for a two litre bottle.

Elsewhere, its Deluxe barista premium coffee was described as "just like Nescafé Azero but cheaper".

One stand out item was Lidl's chocolate spread, which one shopper couldn't praise enough: "Their Italian selection of Nocciolata spread- chocolate and hazelnut spread with real chopped hazelnut- tastes like the centre of a Ferrero rocher."

Non-food items also attracted top reviews - with Lidl's own-brand Aura perfumes described as "great dupes for designer ones".

Other shoppers said their fragrances were of good quality, but complained in the clothing department, its clothes weren't true to size - often coming up smaller.

Lastly, speaking on the one thing they'd like to see changed in store, shoppers said they the bakery section needs a little tlc.

"The bakery could do with some sort of cover over it though and I've seen a lot of mouldy bread products of shelves too, not even something that has just turned, I mean full on green," explained one woman.
